With its characteristic peak, the 4,477m high Matterhorn is the landmark of Switzerland and is one of the most beautiful and photographed mountains in the world. Every year, some 3,000 motivated climbers attempt to scale the near-perfect pyramid shape – about 1,000 of whom have to abandon it undone. Non-mountaineers appreciate the hiking trails and ski slopes of the Matterhorn.
Car-free Zermatt is primarily the base camp for excursions and ascents of the famous Matterhorn. But the cozy ski resort has even more to offer. With a mild climate and over 300 days of sunshine a year, Zermatt offers hikes against the gorgeous backdrop of rugged 4,000-meter peaks and over 300 kilometers of perfectly groomed slopes.
The hiking trail to the Trift Hut in the Trift Gorge leads over the spectacular Trift Bridge at a height of about 100 meters. The 70m long hanging rope bridge in the high alpine mountain and glacier landscape reveals spectacular panoramic views of the Trift glacier lake and the glacier tongue.
The sophisticated resort of St. Moritz in eastern Switzerland is one of the most famous winter sports resorts in the world. High society from all over the world transforms the idyllic mountain village into a cosmopolitan vacation destination. In the breathtaking landscape with its mild “champagne climate”, outdoor and winter sports of all kinds, including horse racing in the snow, attract visitors.
In the Mont Blanc massif, the Trient torrent has cut the Trient Gorge, up to 200m deep, into the rock over time. The spectacular gorge can be explored along a boardwalk on its vertical walls and leads to a spectacular waterfall.
Chillon Castle on Lake Geneva
The picturesque Chillon Castle is located on a rocky island on Lake Geneva and is one of the most beautiful water castles in the country. Switzerland’s most visited historic building is over 1000 years old and is now used for concerts and other cultural events.
At an elevation of 3,454 meters above sea level, the highly scenic Jungfraujoch is the highest railroad station in Europe. Framed by imposing 4,000-meter peaks, the “Top of Europe” is easily reached by the Jungfrau Railway. By the way, the glacier can be walked on – the so-called ice palace can be explored on more than 1,000 square meters.
On the border between the two cantons of Uri and Ticino lies the Gotthard Pass, one of the most important north-south connections in the Alps. The imposing pass road offers Swiss vacationers a breathtaking panorama in a dreamlike mountain landscape.
Speaking of crossing the Alps, this also works with the Bernina Express in a very spectacular way – in a UNESCO World Heritage Site through 55 tunnels and over 196 bridges. On the 4-hour journey from Chur in Switzerland via St. Moritz to Tirano in Italy, 122 kilometers of fascinating glacier landscapes, idyllic Alpine villages and cultural monuments worth seeing await rail travelers.
